Construction of the New Sava Bridge is progressing, and the most complex phase has begun – works on the two river piers located in the water. Unlike the Old Sava Bridge, which had three piers in the river, the new bridge will have only two, while the remaining four will be located on land. This will significantly widen the navigable waterway and allow larger vessels to pass along the Sava River through Belgrade.
The greatest challenge for the construction teams lies in the activities carried out in the river. At pier S3, where a total of 21 piles, each 20 meters long, are planned, works are in full swing. So far, 12 piles have been successfully completed. Pier S4 requires even deeper foundations, with 21 piles of up to 30 meters in length to be installed into the riverbed. At the same time, demolition of the existing river piers from the old structure is nearing completion.
Under the contract, the consortium Millennium Team – Mostogradnja ING is also responsible for surveying the site for unexploded ordnance (UXO), particularly from World War II. Investigations have been carried out both on land and in the river.
The Mine Action Centre of the Republic of Serbia, together with the representative of the Employer, the Belgrade Land Development Public Agency, has prescribed additional safety measures – the formation of a protective sand layer measuring two meters above the riverbed at pier location S3 and four meters at pier location S4.
Works on the land-based piers are nearing completion. On the New Belgrade side, all retaining walls have been completed, while approximately 95% of the works on piers S5 and S6 have been executed. The next phase involves the installation of bearings for the future steel bridge structure. Works are also progressing on the Savski Venac side, where the foundation of pier S2 has been completed. Excavation of the foundation pit for pier S1 has been carried out, and reinforcement installation has commenced. On this bank, all piles for the retaining walls have been completed. Construction of retaining walls on the left side and foundations for retaining walls on the right side of the bridge are currently underway.
