New bridge over the Sava River

Construction of a new bridge over the Sava River at the site of the Old Sava Bridge in Belgrade

The project for the construction of a new bridge over the Sava River and the dismantling of the Old Sava Bridge in Belgrade includes the removal of the existing structure, as well as the construction of piles, foundations, and concrete pillars for the new bridge, along with access roads on both sides of the Sava River.

The dismantling of the Old Sava Bridge is an integral part of the preparations for the construction of a modern, higher-capacity bridge at the same location, between Belgrade Waterfront and the Staro Sajmište.

Using barges and floating cranes, the old bridge was disassembled in several phases and removed from its original position.

The new Sava Bridge will feature two traffic lanes in each direction, bicycle and pedestrian paths, and a central tram track. It will be three times larger than the old bridge, with a 60% greater span. The new steel structure will weigh 6,700 tons. Approximately 25,000 cubic meters of concrete will be used for the bridge, with an additional 10,000 cubic meters for the access roads.

According to the design, the main part of the bridge consists of a steel structure with two parallel, asymmetrical arches. The arches rest on supporting pillars in the riverbed and carry the roadway via a system of tensioned cables. Both supporting arches are of different heights and are inclined toward each other.

The total length of the bridge, measured along the axis of the pillars, is 420.0 meters, with spans distributed as 54.0 + 73.0 + 166.0 + 73.0 + 54.0 = 420.0 meters. The total width of the bridge is 38.1 meters (42.1 meters at pedestrian lookout points). The bridge is designed for vehicular, pedestrian, and tram traffic. It includes six reinforced concrete pillars of varying heights and widths, with deep foundation systems applied.

The planned access roads to the new bridge are located on the right bank of the Sava River in the municipality of Savski Venac (from the bridge structure to the planned roundabout near Karađorđeva Street) and on the left bank in the municipality of New Belgrade (from the bridge structure to the planned roundabout on Vladimira Popovića Street). The traffic layout includes two lanes 6.5 meters wide, a tram track, a double-track tram corridor in the center, and sidewalks on both sides that include one-way bicycle paths.

Mostogradnja ING is involved in the project as part of a consortium with Millennium Team. The project completion deadline is three years. The project investor is the Government of the Republic of Serbia, implemented through the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Finance, with the investor’s representative being Belgrade Land Development Public Agency.

Key figures:

  • Concrete works: ≈34,000 m3
  • Asphalt surface area: ≈15,000 m2
  • Piles: ≈8,200 m
