SIGNED CONTRACT FOR THE PROCUREMENT OF A TBM FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BELGRADE METRO

First “mole” in Serbia in 2026

As part of the construction project for Line 1 of the Belgrade Metro, Mostogradnja ING as the contracting party signed a contract for the procurement of the first TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), also known as a “mole”. The contract for the production of the TBM, valued at over nine million euros, was signed in June 2025 with the Chinese company China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation (CRCHI).

A total of two TBMs will be used for the metro construction: one will be delivered to Mostogradnja ING, and the other to the project’s partner company. These advanced machines are essential for tunnel excavation and represent the most significant investment in modern technology for this project.

During the first phase of metro construction, the TBMs will be engaged in digging 11 kilometers of underground tunnels, out of a total 15 kilometers of the route with 15 planned stations.

The machine’s specifications highlight its impressive capabilities: the excavation diameter is 9.6 meters, the total length of the machine is about 100 meters, and it weighs approximately 1,500 tons. The TBM simultaneously excavates, installs tunnel rings, and applies concrete, effectively constructing the tunnel, which significantly speeds up the work and reduces the environmental impact.

The TBM is scheduled to be delivered in May 2026.
